Who we are
The Colchis is a guide to Georgia, made in Tbilisi and published at thecolchis.com. It is run by an individual entrepreneur registered in Georgia, who decides how the data described here is used (the data controller). For any question about your data, email hello@thecolchis.com.
What data is processed
Four kinds of data can be processed when you use this site.
Hosting logs, by Cloudflare
The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which serves every page. To deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks, Cloudflare processes technical data from each request, such as your IP address and your browser’s user agent. This happens under Cloudflare’s own privacy policy.
Visit counts, by GoatCounter
We count visits with GoatCounter, an analytics service that uses no cookies. It stores nothing in your browser and stores no unique identifier for you. It records totals: which pages are viewed, which sites sent visitors, which booking links are clicked, and details such as browser, screen size and country. GoatCounter says it does not store IP addresses or the full user agent, and that its data is stored on servers in Finland and Germany. Its privacy page sets out the full detail.
Google Analytics, only if you allow it
The first time you visit, a small bar asks whether we may use Google Analytics. If you choose Allow, Google Analytics 4 loads and sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID, kept for up to two years) to tell repeat visits apart. It records which pages you view, how you arrived, the links you follow and details such as device, browser and approximate location. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. If you choose Decline, or choose nothing, Google Analytics never loads. Your choice is kept in your browser, and you can change it at any time with “Cookie settings” at the foot of every page.
Emails you send us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write. Mail to hello@thecolchis.com arrives through Cloudflare Email Routing and is delivered to a private mailbox hosted by Google. We use it only to reply and to act on what you wrote about, such as a correction.
Why we use it, and for how long
- Hosting logs: to deliver the pages and keep the site secure, which is necessary to run it. Cloudflare keeps them under its own policy.
- Visit counts: to see which pages help readers, without identifying anyone. GoatCounter keeps only totals.
- Google Analytics: only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Google keeps this data for two months, the setting on our account.
- Emails: to answer you and act on what you asked. We delete them within 24 months of the last message, unless we need one to deal with a legal claim.
Data outside Georgia
Cloudflare serves the site from its worldwide network. GoatCounter stores its counts in Finland and Germany. If you allow Google Analytics, and whenever you email us, your data is processed by Google, including in the United States.
Cookies
Without your permission The Colchis sets no cookies. The only cookies it can set are the Google Analytics cookies described above, and only after you choose Allow. Your choice itself is stored in your browser’s local storage, not in a cookie. The site has no newsletter, no accounts, no forms, no advertising pixels and no social media widgets.
Partner sites
Partner sites follow their own privacy policies. When you follow a link from The Colchis to a booking platform or an operator’s site, that site may set its own cookies and collect your data under its own policy once you are on it. Read its policy before you book.
Your rights
You can ask us what data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. To do any of these, email hello@thecolchis.com and say what you want. Because we hold so little, in practice this usually means the emails you have sent us.
For data held by Cloudflare, GoatCounter or Google as services, or by a partner site, you can also contact them directly. If you think we have handled your data wrongly, you can complain to the State Audit Office of Georgia, which oversees personal data protection.
Children
The Colchis is a travel guide for adults planning a trip and is not aimed at children. It asks no one for personal data. If a child has emailed us, a parent or guardian can ask us to delete that email.
Changes to this page
If what we process changes, for example if a new service is added, this page will be updated before the change takes effect, and the date below will change with it.
