What is Svaneti?
Svaneti (სვანეთი) is a historic region in the high Caucasus of north-west Georgia, split into Upper Svaneti around Mestia and Lower Svaneti around Lentekhi. It is known for its medieval stone tower houses, for the UNESCO-listed tower village of Chazhashi in Ushguli and for the Svan language.
Is Svaneti worth it?
Yes, if you can give it at least 3 days. The journey is long, about 3 hours by road from Zugdidi on top of getting to Zugdidi, so a quick visit spends more time on the road than in the valleys. In return you get tower villages under glaciated peaks, walks straight from the village edge and the classic multi-day trek in Georgia. It is not a good fit for a trip of a week or less that also has to cover Tbilisi and Kakheti.
Upper Svaneti and Lower Svaneti: which do people mean?
Almost always Upper Svaneti, the valley of the upper Enguri river, with Mestia as its main town and Ushguli at its head. Lower Svaneti lies on the upper Tskhenistsqali river, in a different administrative region, with Lentekhi as its main town. Upper Svaneti belongs to the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, and Lower Svaneti to Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti. A mountain road over the Zagar pass links Ushguli to Lentekhi outside winter.
What to do in Svaneti
The best things to do in Svaneti are the tower villages of Mestia and Ushguli, the walk between them, and the day walks to lakes and glaciers above Mestia.
Mestia and the Svaneti Museum
Mestia is the town at about 1,500 metres that everything in Upper Svaneti starts from, with its own cluster of Svan towers. Its Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography holds the region’s church treasures and icons; allow at least 2 hours for it.
Ushguli, under Shkhara
Ushguli is a community of small villages at about 2,100 metres, at the head of the Enguri gorge, under Shkhara, Georgia’s highest mountain. Its village of Chazhashi keeps more than 200 medieval tower houses, and Upper Svaneti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The Lamaria church on the hill above Zhibiani dates to the 12th century.
Walk from Mestia to Ushguli
The classic walk here links the two tower villages in 4 stages, about 57 km with nights in Zhabeshi, Adishi and Iprali, crossing the Chkhunderi pass at 2,655 metres. Climb to the Koruldi lakes
The Koruldi lakes sit on the slopes above Mestia, and walking up means about 1,400 metres of climbing and at least 7 hours there and back. You can also hire a four-wheel drive to take you up.
Walk to the Chalaadi glacier
The Chalaadi glacier walk is the short one: about 2.5 hours there and back, mostly flat and shaded, with a scramble at the end to the ice.
Ski Hatsvali or Tetnuldi in winter
Mestia has two ski areas close by, Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, so winter in Svaneti means skiing rather than walking.
Eat kubdari and buy Svan salt
Kubdari is the Svan bread baked around a spiced meat filling. Svan salt is coarse salt ground with garlic, herbs and spices, and it makes an easy gift to carry home.
Where to base yourself: Mestia or Ushguli?
Base in Mestia for most trips, and add a night in Ushguli if you can. Mestia has the shops, a cash machine, the museum and the transport, and the day walks to Koruldi and Chalaadi are close by. Ushguli is quieter, higher and closer to Shkhara, and the best light on the mountain comes in the morning, which you only see if you sleep there.
How long should you stay in Svaneti?
Plan at least 3 days in Svaneti: one for Mestia, one for Ushguli and one for a day walk such as Koruldi or Chalaadi. Give it 5 to 7 days if you want to walk from Mestia to Ushguli or go on to Lower Svaneti, and add a day either side for the journey.
How to get to Svaneti
There are three ways in: the road is the reliable one and the plane is the fast one.
By road from Zugdidi, Kutaisi or Tbilisi
The road into Upper Svaneti starts at Zugdidi, and Mestia is about 3 hours from there by shared taxi, or nearly 4 by minibus. By car, allow about 5 to 6 hours from Kutaisi and about 8 to 9 hours from Tbilisi. A direct minibus from Tbilisi takes 9 to 10 hours.
The flight to Mestia
Small planes fly to Mestia from Natakhtari, near Tbilisi, a few times a week. They are cancelled when the weather closes in, and summer seats sell out weeks ahead, so keep a spare day and a road plan.
The train to Zugdidi
The overnight train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi no longer runs. The day train takes about 6 hours, and minibuses to Mestia wait for it at Zugdidi station.
Can you reach Svaneti and Ushguli in winter?
Yes for Mestia, which is ski country in winter; Ushguli is harder. The Ushguli area is under snow for about 6 months of the year, and the concrete road from Mestia, open all year, can close for a time after avalanches or landslides. The Zagar pass road to Lower Svaneti closes in winter and reopens around the end of May.
Is Svaneti safe?
Svaneti is not among the areas the UK Foreign Office advises against: its advice, checked 24 September 2026, is against all travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia and all but essential travel to areas immediately next to their boundary lines. The real risks in Svaneti are mountain ones: sudden storms, glacier rivers that rise through the day, and long drives on mountain roads. Walk with others, cross rivers in the morning and keep a spare day.
What language is spoken in Svaneti?
Svan and Georgian are spoken in Svaneti. Svan is a Kartvelian language, a sister of Georgian rather than a dialect of it, and it has no written standard or official status. Most Svan speakers also speak Georgian, and UNESCO classes Svan as definitely endangered.
When to visit Svaneti
The best time to visit Svaneti for walking is July to September, when the passes are usually clear of snow. Svaneti is one of the regions in our guide to hiking in Georgia, and on the Mestia to Ushguli route the season runs from early June to late October, until the first heavy snow closes the passes. In winter the valleys turn to skiing, and in May snow still lies on the passes.
