Private class, group class or a home kitchen?
A shared class suits solo travellers, couples and anyone watching the budget; a private class suits families, groups and anyone with dishes to ask for. In a home kitchen class the host matters more than the venue, as with any of our hand-picked experiences in Georgia.
A shared class, and new people at dinner
The family dinner class takes a shared group into a Tbilisi home with a guide who translates. The restaurant class is the cheapest way to fold khinkali, at a table in St. Bunny off Rustaveli Avenue.
- Both cancel free up to 24 hours before
- Only the family class ends with a full dinner in a home
Your own group, dishes on request
The private market class is yours alone, up to 7 people: you can ask for dishes (the host confirms a seasonal menu), tour Dezerter Bazaar and cook in a family home. The price a person falls as your group grows.
- Vegetarian menu on offer; confirm other diets before you pay
- Nothing is refunded inside 48 hours of the class
A food tour tastes more than a class cooks
A class teaches a few dishes in one kitchen. A food tour walks you between several stops in the old town and tastes many more dishes in the same few hours.
Seven questions to ask any class before you pay
- Is it in a family home or a restaurant, and will you see the kitchen?
- Which dishes do you make with your own hands, and is the dough made in class?
- How many people share the class, and is it only your group?
- Is a full meal included, and are wine and chacha in the price?
- Can the menu change for a vegetarian or another diet?
- Is transport included both ways, or only to the class?
- Until when can you cancel with a full refund?
Is a private cooking class worth it?
Yes, a private cooking class is worth it for a family or a group of five or more, where the private market class falls to about £117 (155 USD) a person with its checkout fee, and you may request dishes, which the host confirms on a seasonal menu. For a couple it costs more than three times the family dinner class, which cooks in a home too.
What do you cook in a Georgian cooking class?
You cook khinkali and khachapuri in the family dinner and restaurant classes, and the family class adds aubergine with walnuts, a salad and mchadi cornbread. The private class cooks two or three dishes, such as lobio, chakhokhbili or khachapuri; you can ask for dishes, and the host confirms a seasonal menu.
- Khinkalidumplings pleated into a knot at the top, filled with spiced meat, or potato, mushroom or cheese
- Khachapuricheese bread, round in Imereti and boat-shaped in AdjaraFamily dinner class: you bake itPrivate market class: if you askRestaurant class: choose from 3
- Walnut dishesaubergine rolls and pkhali, vegetables pounded with walnuts: the meat-free side of the tableFamily dinner class: auberginePrivate market class: sometimesRestaurant class: not taught
- Winepoured with the food in two classes, and an add-on in the private oneFamily dinner class: wine, chachaPrivate market class: about £14 (18 USD)Restaurant class: one glass
Are cooking classes in Tbilisi suitable for vegetarians?
Yes, if you ask when you book. The family dinner class offers a vegetarian option on request, and the private class’s host offers a vegetarian menu. For any other diet or allergy, note it on the booking form, which goes to the host, and confirm it before you pay. Khinkali can be filled with potato, mushroom or cheese, and the walnut dishes such as pkhali are meat-free.
Cooking classes in Kutaisi and Batumi
Kutaisi and Batumi both have Georgian cooking classes, but none had built enough of a record by September 2026 for us to pick one. Some multi-day wine and food tours build a cooking session into the itinerary, so check the day-by-day plan before you book one separately.
Which khachapuri comes from Kutaisi, and which from Batumi?
Kutaisi is the main city of Imereti, home of the round Imeretian khachapuri (ხაჭაპური), often called the mother of all khachapuri. Batumi is the capital of Adjara, home of the boat-shaped Adjarian one, with an egg and butter in the middle. A class in either city usually teaches its own.
Cooking class questions
How long is a Georgian cooking class?
A Georgian cooking class lasts two and a half to four hours. The restaurant class takes 2.5 hours, the family dinner class 3 hours from the metro, and the private market class about 4 hours with the market walk.
Can children join a cooking class?
Yes, children can join. The family dinner class takes guests aged 5 to 79. The private class is yours alone, so ask the host before you book whether the cooking suits your child’s age.
How we picked
We compared the cooking classes sold in Tbilisi on GetYourGuide with home-hosted classes booked through Traveling Spoon and the restaurants’ own pages, and checked every price, start time, meeting point and cancellation term on the booking pages on 29 September 2026. The test for each pick was how much of the cooking you do with your own hands, where you eat, who shares the table and what the price leaves out.
